A coach can play many roles – mentor, consultant, motivator, teacher … but not a therapist. Coaching deals with the « HOW ». How you can move on from where you are and make a change. It’s action-oriented and concerned with the present and future. When we consider the past, it is just with the intention of reaching a deeper understanding and seeking signs of present improvement.
Why do we need a coach?
The role of the coach is crucial to help people perform at their peak. Should the coach be a subject matter expert in the industry, sector, or environment?
My personal opinion is no. Even in sports, if you look at the top best coaches, few of them were gifted performers themselves; their skills lie in getting the best out of other people.
Should we always have an external coach? Can an internal coach bring the same added value?
My straight answer, it depends on the situation and results you need to achieve. You also need to decide whether an internal or external coach is a better option.
There is a great benefit to be had from having people in organizations with the skills and abilities to draw the best out of people. If possible, I always encourage organizations to invest in training their staff in coaching skills or have a permanent coach, part of the team, not just a problem solver for a specific period.
I genuinely believe that if it were possible for everyone in an organization to improve their performance by as little as one or two per cent, the results would be staggering.
Modest personal change and improvement can combine to make a massive difference to the organization as a whole.
When do we need coaching?
When an individual or a team needs process based guidance and support in achieving a goal or solving a problem.
Whether it is an executive coaching, where managers or seniors of an organization can have regular sessions with a coach to help them work through their current issues or a personal coaching, to help an individual work through personal problems, achieve goals and strike an effective work and life balance, we can see that coaching is meant to give one individual the means to help another move forward and develop in some way.
